I'm in Tioga, ND, center of the new midwestern oil boom, where there's a hiring sign in every window and workers live in "man camps."
I ate lunch at Wildcatz Grill and am now sitting outside the newly built Black Gold Suites. Streets are clogged with fracking fluids trucks.
Last night the 2-pump Kum & Go gas station, which is building 6 new pumps, was hit by a drunk going 25 mph.
The Tioga Tribune reports today that it is moving to the town of Ray because it got evicted and can't find a new office in Tioga
The Tioga office of Continental Resources, run by billionaire Romney donor Harold Hamm, would not talk to me
But they accidentally handed me a list of "guidelines for responding to the media." #4: avoid disclosing "extent of injuries/fatalities"
I am told by many people that Las Vegas strippers have come to North Dakota because they can make $3,000/day--more than in Vegas
The Black Gold Suites. . . http://t.co/SpAfpm4o
Basically, North Dakota is like Texas 3 generations ago. A ranching state becoming an oil state. Just subsitute "yeehaw!" for "oh geez!"
A 2br house costs 650k here. Today's local police blotter: "Sidewalls of a wood grainery were stolen."
Outside Tioga, ND, is "The Dome," a giant tent that looks like an airplane hangar. Rooms cost $110 and include meals and use of Dome gym.
There are thousands of these flares around here. It's like Dante's Inferno. So much natural gas wasted.
A huge gas flare at ground level at an unfenced well right along the hwy. Close as I could get w/o getting burned. http://t.co/U109n6I5
Owner of the Whispers in Williston, ND, says CNN story about his strippers making more than Vegas strippers not true. Doorman disagrees tho.
The owner of Whispers strip club in Williston says the male to female ratio here is 120:1. Guess it's a good place to own a strip club.
Today I was charged by a buffalo in Teddy Roosevelt National Park. So was Roosevelt in his day, though he was on a horse and holding a gun.
You know you're in North Dakota if...an oil boom is going so fast that nobody will buy this shirt 'cause it's outdated. http://t.co/z7y1CZA2
From space, all the gas flares in North Dakota's Bakken oil field make it look like one huge city. Via @mwenergynews http://t.co/OJC1OtGf
