I'm in Detroit, where I'm giving a talk on business journalism. For me this is as novel as going to the moon to talk about particle physics.
At Avis desk in Detroit, a guy says, "They'll kill me if they see me in any other car. It has to be a Chevy."
In Detroit, a parking ticket costs $10, so its cheaper not to pay the meter all day.
I'm blown away by the art scene in Detroit. And all the hipsters. Corktown is like a little slice of Wburg or Mission, but with better BBQ.
Astro Coffee in Detroit is the only place outside Cali that I've seen Ritual coffee. Flavor profile of my cup: "Almond, marshmellow, fig"
I was up til 3 am exploring abandoned bldgs with Detroit graffitti artists. Which probably wouldn't bat an eye here at Astro Coffee.
Here's the mural that graf artists Revok and Rime worked on yesterday before we went prospecting in vacant buildings http://t.co/Bz9AVzip
Revok was basically kicked out of LA, where he had a show at MOCA, for tagging stuff. But Detroit loves him, and he's made it a destination.
In a vacant police station, Rime found bullets & police reports with mug shots and social security #s. He uses them as canvases for his art
We found these bullets last night in the munitions room of an abandoned courthouse in Highland Park, a Detroit suburb. http://t.co/hpNOtVgq
I'm on my way back to Detroit airport. So many huge debris trucks on the freeway, all carting off the city.
